How to use Adobe
Acrobat Reader
Adobe Acrobat Reader is a software program that interprets
files that are in portable document format (PDF). The
first step in being able to open files of type .pdf,
is to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. Visit the
Adobe web
site for further details.
When viewing web pages that have links to a pdf file,
once Acrobat Reader is installed, when you click on
the link, Acrobat Reader will automatically start up
with the document. Depending on your browser. Acrobat
may open inside your browser window or in a new window.
Navigating Acrobat Reader

- To go to the Adobe web site, click on the icon labeled
#1 above.
- To open a pdf file, click on the open file icon
labeled #2 above and navigate to the file you wish
to open.
- To save the document on your hard drive or to a
floppy disk, click on the save icon labeled #4 above
or select Fileà Save As.
Be sure to remember where you have saved the file.
- To print the document, click on the print icon labeled
#5 above or select Fileà
Print.
- To show or hide the navigation pane that is shown
on the left of the screen on the first graphic above,
click on the Show/hide navigation pane icon labeled
# 6 above. If the creator of the pdf included thumbnails,
the when the navigation pane is visible, you can use
the pane to double click on the page that you want
to view.
- To navigate through the document, click on the first
page #7, previous page #8, next page #9, and last
page icons #10.
- To change the view, click on the previous view #11
or next view icons #12. These work like your browser's
back #11 and forward #12 buttons.
- To change the size of the document, click on the
actual size #13, fit in window width #14 or fit width
#15 icons.
- To find a word or phrase in a document, click on
the find icon #16.
- Type in the word or phrase and press find.
- The word or phrase found will be highlighted
in the document.
- To search Adobe documentation, click on the search
icon #17
- To view the search results click on the search results
icon #18.

- To change the zoom, click on the drop down arrow
at the bottom of the screen. Change to the desired
setting.
- To input a specified amount, click inside the box
and type in a value.
- To change the page, click on the arrows next to
the number of pages.
- To change how the pages are viewed, click on the
paper icon to change between single page, continuous
or continuous facing. This will allow you to scroll
from one page to the next with the vertical scroll
bar.
- To move around the document, use the vertical and
horizontal scroll bars.
- Or if you put your mouse over the document, a hand
will appear.
- You can hold down the mouse button and drag the
document around.
If the document was pre pared with links the hand will
change to a pointer finger. You can click on the link
as you would in a browser.
Acrobat Reader has many more options that you can explore
from the menu bar with File, Edit, View, etc.
